AI-Driven Energy Efficiency and Emissions Reduction in Maritime Engineering

Introduction
Decarbonization is the defining engineering challenge of the decade, mandated by the IMO’s increasingly stringent emissions regulations. This manifests as “Decarbonization Engineering,” where AI tools optimise fuel switching, carbon capture, and wind-assisted propulsion, to rapidly prototype and deploy AI energy-optimisation models across high-tech, green-fueled fleets.

In emerging economies often focus on the “Efficiency First” principle. In these regions, AI is the primary tool for reducing fuel spend and qualifying for “Green Finance” by providing transparent, documented proof of emissions reductions. This course navigates the socio-economic impact of decarbonization, ensuring that managers can maintain a competitive advantage while meeting global environmental standards.

This course is about the “Triple Bottom Line”, Profit, People, and Planet. We explore how AI-enabled fuel management can reduce operational costs while simultaneously fulfilling the firm’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop engineering strategies that meet global emissions standards through AI fuel management.
  2. Lead “Innovation Sprints” to test new carbon-reduction technologies on existing fleets.
  3. Formulate data-driven “Green Shipping” reports for international regulatory bodies.
  4. Implement AI-based energy optimization for varied hull types and propulsion systems.
  5. Design fuel-switching algorithms for hybrid-propulsion and multi-fuel vessels.
  6. Evaluate the socio-economic impact of decarbonization on emerging trade routes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Analyse AI energy models such as weather routing and hull friction analysis.
  2. Apply AI compliance tools that automate IMO emissions reporting requirements.
  3. Examine the role of AI in optimizing “Just-in-Time” arrivals to reduce port emissions.
  4. Calculate the carbon-intensity reduction achieved via AI-driven engine tuning.
  5. Relate energy efficiency gains to the “Triple Bottom Line” of maritime sustainability.
